Veterans For Peace, VFP is a volunteer organization of
military veterans which provides speakers free of charge to high
schools, colleges, campus, civic and religious organizations, unions
and other community groups. We also participate in forums and debates.
Our members, men and women, represent diverse ethnic backgrounds as
well as diverse branches of the armed services. We share a strong
belief that, before young people decide about military service, they
should hear about war firsthand from those who were there. VSA speakers
can provide historical perspective. We can speak honestly and
realistically about the tragedies of war, because many of us have been
there.
Students ask questions which reflect a lack of
understanding of the true nature of war and a lack of knowledge of
America's recent wars. Such as:
How many of the enemy did you kill?
Did you win any medals?
How did war affect your outlook on life?
Would you do it again?
Doesn't the military provide good job training?
As parents and teachers, we have the responsibility to provide
information and guidance which will help them make difficult decisions
that will affect the rest of their lives and the lives of people all
over the earth.
VSA can help you give young people the information they
need to make choices about the military and military service. Often
when making these crucial decisions, the only voice they hear is that
of a military recruiter. As a result, their information is one sided,
unbalanced and may be inaccurate. As veterans of war in Viet Nam, Korea
and WWII, we answer both tough and naive questions. But we go beneath
the surface to describe some of the basic facts about military life and
conflict.
